Description
When the remote colony of Dunest is in danger of eradication, three heroes answer the call... There may be enemies behind every corner, and utmost peril at every turn, but together you can overcome any obstacle... ...As long as you can survive each other. Carnage in Space: Crucible is a fast-paced, endlessly-customizable action platformer/beat-em-up. While you fight your way through a wide variety of combat scenarios and platforming challenges with three unique playable characters, you'll also take in a deep, layered story of mistrust, cooperation, and betrayal from each of their three perspectives.
History
Carnage in Space: Crucible, is a continuation of the same hobby passion project that produced the previous game, Carnage in Space: Ignition. It was made entirely in my free time, with an out-of-pocket budget. The game entered Early Access in 2023
Features
- The story basics: Three very different protagonists - each hailing from an entirely different genre - meet in a space-western frontier town and must cooperate to protect it from an impending alien invasion while simultaneously navigating their own conflicting personalities and loyalties.
- Three heroes, three stories: Each playable character has his own unique playstyle, and his own perspective on the events that unfold. Each hero sees things that the others don't, with their own ongoing side-plot in the background that the others aren't privy to. Thus, the game gets replayability from the chance to revisit familiar events and see what all your hero was missing out on.
- Platforming: This is an action-platformer with controls inspired by classics such as Mega Man X/Zero and Cave Story. While not too extreme, there are still a variety of platforming challenges requiring you to get familiar with basic abilities such as dashing and wall-jumping, and character-specific moves like hovering and grappling.
- Combat: The real meat of the game. There's a healthy selection of enemies and bosses with distinctive attack patterns that must be dodged. Some of them have defenses like shields and armor that you need to hit around (or use a piercing weapon on). When fighting bosses and stronger enemies, pay attention to their attack pattern for the moment they drop their guard (with an orange flash effect) so you can punish them with a time-sensitive critical hit.
- Alternate weapons and builds: The game's character customization comes from its wide selection of alternate weapons, character-specific ability upgrades, and passive nanotech abilities. Combining all of these with the 3 playable characters offers many different ways to traverse, and more importantly battle your way through the game's levels. Do you prefer up-close melee combat or precise gunplay? All-out aggression or patient analysis? There's a build for that.
- Side content: While a single playthrough can be finished in a few hours, there's plenty of optional content for the completionists and challenge gamers among us in the form of arena battles, boss rush, and challenge mode.
