Spit and Polish

Boss Rush is nearly done! That bonus boss is starting to look pretty horrifying! But before I toss the next (and FINAL) major release out the door, I figure it’s about time to hand you my very large pile of bugfixes and minor updates.

First off: Desktop versions!
You can now download Ignition for Windows or Mac OS to play from the comfort of your desktop/laptop. It even gets its own neat little icon in the taskbar/dock!

This may not seem like much, but this will be the key to figuring out my monetization strategy. Who knows? You may someday see this game on Steam.

Next up: Hit flashes!
Every melee weapon (and eventually, every bullet) has a unique flash that appears over an enemy when you hit it. Just a little more flavor shaken into the game, I guess.

Tag. You’re it.

Let’s see. What else is there? Oh, yes. Better confirmation dialogs (before you log out of your offline save and delete it forever), the very last updated shop image (for the Polar Blades), some more Easter Eggs, and a slightly grumpier Quadcopter (in LVL5). I’d mention bugfixes, but that’s what the changelog is for.

Until next time,
HUZZAH!

~ MM

The Battle Goes On

Those of you who beat LVL7 may be wondering what happens next. And so, I’ve been working feverishly to hastily bring you the next update… with infinite enemies to kill in the meantime! Yay!

The website has also had some refactoring in the background. This has made it a bit easier to add the new (separate) Endless Ground score to the highscores. Soon, it will allow me to add Facebook login, which will let you guys log in without having to remember one more password! It will also let you post your highscores and achievements to Facebook to brag to your friends, because I’m told that’s a thing social media users do 😛

Next update, expect that Facebook stuff. After that, some more cleanup. And then, eventually, LVL8 will come.

Until then, HUZZAH!

Maintenance

Yes, I am still working on LVL6. Stop asking me that, imaginary reader!

In the meantime, pressing issue: My website is terrible. Maybe you can’t tell by looking at it, but it’s a mess. I’m gonna fix that.

Bad news: Bad things might happen while I transfer. I will try to keep the game working, but you might lose the ability to load/save your files/scores (they’ll still be safe with me even if you can’t reach ’em!). If you lose access to your account or your save files, don’t panic! They’ll be back.

Good news: I’m getting a better hosting plan and working to de-terrible-ize  the website, making the following things happen:

  • My new plan will let me send emails for stuff like password recovery and feedback on bug reports!
  • I’ll have a local copy of the website to edit so I can test changes before making them go live and break everything! Fancy that!
  • I’m gonna make the code more modular so my changes will have a smaller chance of breaking everything.
  • The Big Database of Everything will get copied over, so your accounts and save files and highscores will be left intact. 93.2% Guaranteed*!

Note: The domain is staying the same, so your bookmarks for carnageinspace.com are still good!

So, here goes my weekend project. See you on the other side!

* What can I say? The game’s a beta. That said I will do everything I can to make sure you don’t lose everything. Backups upon backups!

Well, don’t I feel like an idiot!

So for the past who-knows-how-many-months, I haven’t been seeing any new save files from new registered accounts. And I haven’t been paying too much attention to that. But after looking at a complaint on the game’s Newgrounds page, I realized that something was very wrong. It turns out that people have been making new accounts on the website, but they didn’t make new save files in them BECAUSE THEY COULDN’T LOG IN!

So I looked at the registration code, and wouldn’t you know it, the encrypted password was being generated incorrectly. Personally, I blame the PHP scripting language for not warning you when you use variables that don’t exist because you spelled ’em wrong. That way I won’t have to admit that I’m just a moron that doesn’t test his code properly. What’s that? I said it in the post title? Well, never mind then.

Anyway. You can now log in to your shiny new accounts. All of the affected accounts have been deleted, so if you couldn’t log in before, please make a new account and it should work for you. As always, if all else fails you can press “Offline Mode” at the game’s login screen.

I also fixed another dumb bug that turned health/ammo upgrades into monetary black holes. Yay.

On a more positive note, LVL5 is almost done! It’s just missing graphics and cutscenes, basically.

== Minor ==
[MENU] Added backgrounds to Armory, Settings and Instructions
[GRAPHICS] Updated Vibrosword and Lightsaber icons and detail images
[WEAPONS] Rockets will no longer target off-screen enemies
[GAMEPLAY] The number of retries you get is tied to difficulty level (4 on Normal)

== Bugfix ==
[LEVEL] The bomb warning messages in LVL4 would not play
[MENU] Unpurchased items would not be grayed-out
[MENU] Health/Ammo upgrades could not be bought
[WEBSITE] It was impossible to log in to new accounts (all affected accounts have been deleted)
