Progress; Meanwhile, Bugfixes

Over the last month, I’ve managed to put together a lot of the assets I’ll need for LVL5. Now all I have to do is rearrange them into a well-designed level, program the boss, and the opening/closing cutscenes, and it will be ready to go. I also made a few tweaks to my prototype for LVL8 (the super-special level), bringing it just a little bit closer to the vision I have in mind for it.

For now, I bring you bug fixes. I haven’t been able to figure out what’s keeping people from logging in, I’m afraid. I’m still working on it.

== Minor ==
[GRAPHICS] Added new death explosions
[WEAPONS] Tweaked Lance detail image
[MENU] At the title screen, if you are not logged in, Play and Settings will be disabled (previously would take you to Login)
[MENU] Added a new icon for the challenges page
[MENU] Entering a level has the same pixellation effect as finishing one (if fast transitions is off)
[GRAPHICS] Made a new sprite for normal blaster shots

== Bugfix ==
[MENU] The level name text box in the level select was missing
[HUD] The equipped weapon icons were missing
[GRAPHICS] Effects like shrapnel and explosions would not freeze when paused
[MENU] Health/Ammo upgrades in the Armory would show the detail image of the last item you looked at
[LEVEL] Standing on a submarine in LVL3 as it exits the left side of the level would cause you to teleport to the right side of the ocean section
[MENU] In the shop, it was possible to access items in the disabled “???” tab

Where it all began

Some of you may look at the title of this game, and wonder… if this is number 2, what ever happened to number 1? You could look at the Other Games page on the website and find it, but it’s a daunting task to get it running on your computer – until now!

I present to you, a single, simple download with only one application to start before you can dive into the original Carnage in Space in all its glory!

To play (Windows only):

  1. Download and unzip this package
  2. Open Carnage in Space.exe
  3. Enjoy!

To play (Windows, Mac or Linux):

  1. Download the same package
  2. Open zelda-w.exe
  3. Create a new save file and give it any name
  4. Before playing on the save file, press the “A” control (Default left Alt) and choose the file “Carnage in Space.qst”
  5. Play the new save file by pressing Start (default Enter/Return)

Note: See Other Games for a list of default controls.

Polishing Those Menus

Well, so much for that last promise.

Sorry, but I’ve run into a big case of developer’s block (yes, that’s a thing) that’s kept me pretty much paralyzed for the past two months. So, no level 5 yet. The graphics guy is starting to put the next tileset together, so maybe that will help me get my act together and get going.

In the meantime, I have a thing to show off: menus! As a player you may think them boring, but as an amateur GUI developer they mean a lot to me. The Settings menu (who goes there?!) and the Armory (a place you actually go) have now been given a neat, streamlined, keyboard-friendly tabbed redesign. Go check it out next time you play! I’m rather proud of how they turned out.

WARNING: The Armory has a bug where you can’t select items with the mouse. Since the game is mainly keyboard-based, I figured it wouldn’t bring about the end of the world as we know it.

In other news, I’m planning to release this game to the Chrome app store! I hope that will bring in a bunch of new players, and maybe inspire me to get back to work. Maybe they won’t all rage at me for the bugs you’ve all been finding (please do keep reporting them, though).

Anyway, hope to get level 5 put together soon-ish. Talk to you later!
